"I wish we would have come here last year with this kind of attitude,'' said Pau Gasol, who scored 24 points with 14 rebounds Thursday night to lead the Lakers to a 110-109 overtime victory over Boston. "Nobody backed down,'' he added. "We were as physical as anybody.'' In a rematch of an NBA finals in which the Celtics outmuscled the Lakers to the title, Lamar Odom made a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left in overtime and Los Angeles held on with physical defense against Paul Pierce and Allen that prevented either All-Star from getting off a clean shot. The loss snapped the Celtics' 12-game winning streak and dropped them to 0-2 against the best in the West. Boston trails the Lakers by percentage points for the best overall record in the NBA, and would lose a tiebreaker for home court advantage in the finals - if they both make it back. "It would be great,'' Pierce said. Kevin Garnett banged his fist on the table in agreement, and then interjected a reminder that seemed to be intended for the locker room across the hall: "We're the champs, man.'' While these may not have been Bird's or KG's Celtics, MJ had one of those 40point type games without breaking a sweat like only he could. This time, it was with a dislocated shooting finger and back spasms midway. For me, at this point in his career, it was more about appreciating his polished and perfected game more than the actual outcome - which was predictable anyway. (Thanks to J. There are just too many things that the Boston Celtics did better than the Orlando Magic to single out technical reasons for their 94-71 Game 3 victory. They shot better, helped on defense better, found the open man better and just about anything else you can think of. But above all, the reason the Celtics are now four quarters away from returning to the NBA Finals is simple: they fought harder. Sure, it's a sports clich to say that one team just wanted it more -- and really, both teams "wanted" to win -- but the Celtics showed it, and everyone saw it. "Our heart, it seemed like it wasn't into it," Dwight Howard said. "They played harder and wanted it," Matt Barnes said. "I just didn't think we stayed with the fight very well at all," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. You don't hold an opponent to 74.6 points per 100 possessions through three quarters without battling, nor do you get the opponent's coach talking about keeping his team from escaping if you aren't breathing fire. But the most talked-about sequence of the game, one single first-half possession, encapsulated everything. Ben Gordon scored 22 points, hitting the tying 3-pointer in the first overtime, and the Bulls beat the defending champions 121-118 in double overtime Sunday to tie their first-round series at two games apiece. The teams split two tight games in Boston, before the Celtics blew out the Bulls in Game 3. This time, they stretched the drama into a second overtime. "Everybody I'm talking to is saying this is the most exciting series that they're watching right now,'' Gordon said. It's tough to argue. Derrick Rose added 23 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. John Salmons scored 20 points after a slow start, hitting four free throws in the final 26 seconds of the game and blocking Paul Pierce's tying 3-pointer. Boston's Ray Allen buried a 3-pointer with 9.8 seconds left in regulation to tie it at 96 before Rose missed a potential winning fadeaway in the closing seconds. Gordon came through with 4.5 seconds left in the first overtime, hitting a 3-pointer over Pierce to tie it at 110, and the Bulls never trailed in the second OT. Salmons hit two free throws with 26 seconds left and, after a 3-pointer by Pierce, he hit two more at the line.
