World Cup Qualifier: Mexico – USA 2:1 Video
Main event of sixth round qualifications for World Cup 2010 in South Africa in group CONCACAF was derby between USA and Mexico. Mexico was better team and won the match 2:1, preserving tradition of successive wins in duels with United States. Match was played at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Americans lost all but one of their games since this beautiful venue was opened before 43 years. Only in distant 1997 it was draw (0:0).
On the other hand, American soccer team was never so close to stop this unwanted tradition like this time. Draw was possibility until nine minutes to final whistle blow, and American players looked good from the beginning.
Charlie Davies hit in 9. minute, assisted by Landon Donovan, when Americans went ahead with 1:0. Celebration was short lived thank to the Israel Castro shot in 19. minute when result was leveled at 1:1
Nets on both sides were untouched after that until 81. minute when Mexican reserve Miguel Sabah brought relief to the crowd and to the coach Javier Aguirre, who gave him a chance at the right moment.
Crowd of 105,000 delighted fans went wild, because this win gives Mexico some hope for final stages of World Cup 2010 qualifications.
They are now just point behind Honduras and United States and three points behind table leader Costa Rica. Costa Rica unexpectedly lost to Honduras (0:4)
